Vad betyder namnet Same?

Namnet “Same” är förnorskningen av det samiska ordet sápmi (Nordsamisk)/ saemie (Sörsamisk), som visar till område, folk och språk. Ordet härstammar från det urbaltiska/slaviska ordet žeme som betyder “winter”, och är omskriven till šämä på urfinska ursamisk som sen blev moderniserat till sápmi.

Egentligen har uttrycket pack också samma betydelse:

pakk[anen] : frost, cold, freeze, freeze-up

Två andra namn till dem dvs., finnar och lapp (labb, fot på djur) betyder “de som följer renarnas fotspår”:

So far then as these men (Argippeans, Bashkirs) this country is known; but, for what lies north of the bald men, no one can speak with exact knowledge; for mountains high and impassable bar the way, and no man crosses them.
