معنی محتمل ایرلند

جزء ایر در نام ایرلند را در زبانهای هندواروپایی به معنی واژۀ Ebriu (جزیرۀ سرد و زمستانی) گرفته اند که صورت اولیۀ نام لاتینی هیبرنیا است:

Ἰουερνία Iouerníā was a Greek rendering of the Q-Celtic name *Īweriū, from which eventually arose the Irish names Ériu and Éire. The name was altered in Latin (influenced by the word hībernus) as though it meant “land of winter”, although the word for winter began with a long ‘i’.

Beira, Queen of Winter, also Cailleach Bheur, a personification or deity of winter in Gaelic mythology, moreover, Old Irish í (“island”) was a loanword from Old Norse ey (“island”).

The name Eira is a name of Welsh origin meaning “snow”.

نام ایرلند (سرزمین زمستانی) و ارمنستان (سرزمین عقاب، سائینی اوستا) تنها شباهت ظاهری با نام ایران (سرزمین نجبا) دارند.
