واژۀ دختر را در سنسکریت می توان به معنی شیر دهنده (دارای شیر) گرفت:
दुग्ध n. dugdha(-ra): (to give) milk
دوشیزه فارسی را هم در رابطه آن می توان به همین معنی دارندۀ شیردهی گرفت:
ईश adj. iza owning
در مقابل آن، پسر (payas-ar= برخوردار از نطفه) یا همان پوت-رَ سنسکریت مترادف با واژۀ هندواروپایی سون به معنی دارای تخمه و نطفۀ رشد و بقای نسل است:
